about

The Eva Klesse Quartett story begins on 8 January 2013, with a small session opener gig in Leipzig. Almost ten years, four albums, hundreds of concerts, numerous awards (Echo Jazz, SWR Jazzpreis and others) and tours spanning thousands of miles halfway around the world later, the band is now releasing its fifth (anniversary) album: songs against loneliness. With the albums 13 new pieces, the quartet around Evgeny Ring (saxophone), Philip Frischkorn (piano) Eva Klesse (drums) and - new addition - Marc Muellbauer (double bass) once again proves its gift for telling musical stories that deal with - not only, but also - the realities and emotions of the pandemic last two years, with longing, hope, melancholy, but also with healing, resilience and strength.

After the quartet’s 10 years of musical and amicable connection, songs against loneliness reveals a real sense of artistic maturity. It becomes more than apparent: these four are perfectly attuned to each other. The ensemble learned early on that its collective strength is founded on giving each other space for everyones different attitudes and individual expression. The great quality of this band is the way they listen to each other, encouraging and challenging each other with subtle sensitivity. The music on the new album invariably shows clear structure and defined form within which the musicians move freely with a dreamlike assuredness.
With newly heightened focus and awareness, the quartet once again demonstrates its aesthetic approach: the translation of stories, images and feelings into songs without words. And this translation is particularly successful on songs against loneliness. In fact much of this album is reminiscent of poetry. Every tone, every gesture, every note and beat, is deliberately placed, like punctuation marks and line breaks. What has remained throughout the years is the interactive pleasure of playing and the intensive and joyful interaction of the four musicians that can be witnessed so well in live concerts.
